Playbook: Project Websites

You want to make a legit website. The problem is you're not a pro designer or developer (yet). So, here's the hack...

🔑
Use Themeforest. That's it.

Note: This is a TKSecret 🤫

Step 1: Go to https://themeforest.net/category/site-templates

Step 2: Decide between Wordpress or HTML. See below for pros and cons.

Step 3: Search the type of website you're looking for. If it's for a product, search "landing page" or "product". If it's for a mobile app, search "mobile".

Step 4: Buy the theme and build your website.

Other things you'll need:

  • Domain. You can buy a domain from places like GoDaddy.com
    • Try to get a .com domain.
    • Retailmenot.com has good coupon codes for GoDaddy (hosting and website).
  • Host. You'll need to host your website somewhere.
  • Code editor. You can figure out which one is best for you. Ask friends, post in #tkslife, you'll figure it out.

Tips:

  • Don't have a "squarespace.[yourname].com" url. That's not legit. Have a clean URL.
  • Buy a custom domain.
  • Use Retailmenot.com for discounts
  • Get a host for your website (use Retailmenot.com for coupon codes)
    • If you don't know what hosting is, YouTube it and figure it out.
    • You'll need a domain and hosting for your website. There's tons of tutorials on YouTube.
  • Don't use Wix or that type of stuff. It's expensive with custom domains. Use Themeforest. Make it legit. High Standards.
  • Use this for your personal website also. Just search for "personal" on themeforrest.

NEW: Webflow

  • Pro: Easy to get started.
  • Con: It's new, so not many people have used it.
  • Try it: https://webflow.com/

Wordpress

  • Pro: Easy to build with once you learn how.
  • Con: Setup can take longer.
  • Con: A bit more expensive (but still a great deal).

HTML

  • Pro: Cheaper
  • Pro: More flexible if you know how to code.
  • Con: More complicated than Wordpress.
